Key Features

Checked with the official register

EU and Northern Ireland numbers are checked live with the EU VAT register, and Norwegian numbers with the Norwegian business register.

Name and address

See the registered business name and address where the country discloses them. Some countries, such as Germany, never do.

Honest unknowns

When a national register is down or busy, the result says so. A number is never reported as invalid because a register did not answer.

Example request

GET /v1/vat/validate?vat=DE811569869

Built on the same API

The browser experience previews DomScan's structured endpoints, so teams can validate a use case before writing code.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries are supported?

EU Member State and Northern Ireland (XI) VAT numbers are checked live through VIES; Norwegian numbers are checked through the Norwegian business register. For Great Britain, Switzerland and Australia, this tool checks format and supported check digits only. A passing format result does not confirm registration, so the registration status remains unknown.

Is this the same check as VIES?

Yes. For EU numbers, the live registration check is made through VIES. If the API request includes your own EU VAT number, VIES may return a consultation number with the result. That number identifies the VIES query; it does not by itself establish whether a transaction meets tax obligations.

What does an unknown result mean?

Unknown means the live source did not return a conclusive answer, for example because it was busy, unavailable or returned an unclear response. It does not mean the VAT number is invalid. Try again later or check the issuing country's official service. Checks that could not be completed are not charged through the API.
