Frequently asked questions
Does a valid DNI mean the person exists?
No. The check confirms that the number is well formed and its control letter is correct. It does not confirm that the number was issued or who it belongs to.
How is the DNI letter calculated?
The 8 digits are divided by 23 and the remainder picks the letter from a fixed table. NIEs replace the first letter X, Y or Z with 0, 1 or 2 first. Company NIFs use a different control digit or letter.
Can I check whether a company is registered for VAT?
Yes. Use the VAT number checker with the ES prefix, for example ES B12345678, to check the company with the EU VAT register.
